Improving lives through sustainable livelihoods and rehabilitation

Chainpurwa Village: The Story

Chainpurwa is a remote village, cut-off from the nearby suburbs due to being surrounded by the expansive Bhagahar Lake on three sides. The people here have lost a lot to the illicit liquor trade. Out of the 94 families of this village, 32 women are widows. Only 6 men in the entire village were in a condition to work, the rest are in jail, handicapped or heavily addicted. Most children didn't go to school and those who did, faced economic hurdles and social stigmas.

In 2020, at the peak of the COVID19 pandemic Chainpurwa was intensely affected and the residents were at the edge of starvation. It pushed the residents of the village further towards illicit activities.

The then Superintendent of Police, Dr Aravind Chaturvedi initiated a project in the village for the rehabilitation of the residents, in association with Madhumakhiwala founder Nimit Singh.

Apart from the government machinery, many individuals, businesses and NGOs came to the help of this village and many activities were conducted.

The people of Chainpurwa have been assisted by the Chainpurwa Kayakalp Foundation in developing sustainable livelihoods like beekeeping, diya-making, agarbatti-making and more. From a village plagued with illegal activities and everyday hardships, Chainpurwa has transformed into a village of highly energetic youth and self-reliant women who can have their heads held high with their inspirational story.

Chainpurwa Beeswax Diyas

Trained by Madhumakhiwala, the women of Chainpurwa make beeswax diyas for Navratra and Diwali festivals. It is an important part of the income of the village and is made possible by the support of bulk and retail buyers of the Diyas.
